The next morning the ship docked about 8:00 AM in St John, Antigua, about 170 nautical miles south east of St. Thomas. Antigua is one of the British Leeward islands. St John is a nice little port city with a beautiful church, Saint John the Divine. The church was originally constructed in 1681 and then replaced in 1722. The Church was destroyed again by an earthquake in 1843. In the same year, construction of the present stone buildings was begun, with the consecration of the cathedral taking place in 1848. You can see they are presently restoring this beautiful church. I had started this cruise with extremely bad knees and could hardly walk. Now, by St John, I was able to walk several blocks. We enjoyed St John, but there was not very much there. The shopping was not very good at all. The Official currency is EC (Eastern Caribbean), but they do take dollars. I do not remember seeing any of their currency. We walked around for only a couple of hours and headed back to the ship. We made it back before noon and headed to the II Patio to enjoy lunch and Los Reyes Paraguayos. I sure if my knees were better, we would have enjoyed this port more. The rest of the day we enjoyed the pool and sun. |
