Our next port of call was Livorno, Italy. We took this cruise because Rafaela and Greg Olive were going on it. Greg had did a lot of work before the cruise and had arranged transportation at several ports. Here in Livorno, Greg had Papillon Tour Service as our transportation provider. From this port we visited both Pisa and Florence Italy. Greg had made arrangements for a driver with a vehicle. The driver spoke English and was extremely helpful. The vehicle was a Mercedes van and we were at least two hours ahead of the people who took bus tours. This really help us and enable us to see much more than those who took ship tours. |

Our first stop of the day was at Pisa. I guess, for this being one of the seven wonders of the old world, I was expecting more. It is located on a couple of city blocks with a beautiful church next to the tower. The Cathedral of Pisa was very impressive. The tower was leaning, one of the best sights on the web for Pisa and several other locations in Italy is Italy Guides.It. But it was being work on at the time of our visited so we did not climb it. Had it been open for tours, we might of been more impressed with the tower. The Tower was begun in 1173 and construction was stop when the tower began to lean, only three stories had be build of this bell tower. About in 1270, they thought they knew how to overcome the leaning and they added an additional 5 more stories. |
